From the Desk of Deacon Dave As we celebrate the 8th Sunday in Ordinary time our readings are all about the power of the spoken word. Our words often mean far more to others than we might think. And our words can be helpful or hurtful to others. I remember when I was in seventh grade at Fourteen Holy Helpers grammar school. My science teacher was Mrs. Mary Murphy. We had a science fair competition where we were to present our review of some new scientific breakthrough. I chose acrylics which were brand new at the time. I recall demonstrating how strong this new kind of plastic was and how many things it could be used for. But what I remember most was Mrs. Murphy saying to me, “This is really fascinating Dave. You have done a good job in presenting this.” I didn’t win the competition, but I never forgot how great it felt to have someone who I respected tell me that I had done well and was on the right track. I am sure she never knew how much that meant to me at 12 years of age. It is good, from time to time, to think about who is really listening to what YOU have to say. It just might be something that they will still remember forty years later. So make it count, and make it good! God’s Peace, Dcn. Dave
